Numbers 0–20

Hook: Phone numbers, prices, ages, addresses — numbers appear in almost every real conversation you’ll have.

Notice: zero, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty.

The rule

Numbers 13–19 end in -teen; note the small spelling changes: thirteen, fifteen, eighteen. 20 is twenty, a new word (not “two-teen”).

Practice

  1. Write the numeral for “seventeen.” (Answer: 17)
  2. Write the word for 12. (Answer: twelve)
  3. Which number is spelled differently from what you’d expect: thirteen, fourteen, or fivteen? (Answer: fifteen, not “fivteen”)
  4. Say your age out loud in English.
  5. Say a phone number, digit by digit, in English.
