Can-Do Task: My Abilities & Hobbies

Your Task

Talk about your abilities and hobbies. Write three parts: (1) three things you can do and one you can’t, (2) three things you love, like or hate doing, and (3) your answers to a friend’s questions about your free time. Then say Part 3 out loud as a conversation.

Before You Start

  1. Part 1: three can sentences (say how well) and one can’t.
  2. Part 2: three sentences with love / like / hate + -ing.
  3. Part 3: answer these questions: “What do you do in your free time?” · “Can you play any sports?” · “What are you good at?” Add What about you? at the end.
  4. Check every verb after can (no -s, no to) and after like (-ing).

Useful Language

  • Ability: I can… very well / quite well / a little · I can’t… at all
  • Likes: I love / like / don’t mind / hate + -ing
  • Hobbies: play football · play the guitar · go swimming · do yoga
  • Skill: I’m good at… · I’m not very good at…
  • Conversation: What about you? · Really? · Me too!

Model Answer

Read this example first. Then write your own; don’t copy it.

Part 1: I can cook pasta very well. I can ride a bike. I can speak two languages. I can’t swim at all!
Part 2: I love playing football. I like reading comics. I hate cleaning my room.
Part 3: In my free time I read, and I play football with my friends on Saturdays. / Yes, I can play football and basketball, but I’m not very good at basketball. / I’m good at cooking: I love making pasta for my family. What about you?
