Hook: Before learning grammar, you need the handful of instruction words that appear in almost every lesson, video, and worksheet in this course.

Notice: “Listen and repeat.” “Open your book.” “Write the answer.” “Look at the picture.” “Turn the page.”

The rule

These are imperative sentences — instructions. In English, we usually give instructions with the base form of the verb and no subject: Listen. Repeat. Write. Look. You’ll meet imperatives properly in Module 5, but you need these five now just to use the rest of the course comfortably.

Practice

  1. “___ and repeat” (Answer: Listen)
  2. “___ your book to page 5” (Answer: Open)
  3. True or False: instructions like “Listen” have a subject like “You listen.” (Answer: False)
